The Church has always taught that Catholics do not sin when they are unable to come to Mass for "grave cause" or "serious reason." This includes illness, care of others, remoteness or unavailability of Mass for a number of reasons.
In these cases the Church encourages us to make an act of “spiritual communion,” where we unite ourselves to God through prayer. It is a beautiful way to express to God our desire to be united with him when we are unable to complete that union in the reception of Holy Communion.
My dear Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most blessed Sacrament. I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.
Oh, my Jesus, thank you for allowing me to receive you today. Pour out your Holy Spirit upon me. Flood me with the light of your love and illumine every darkness within me.
Shatter my heart of stone, grind the stone to dust, and burn the dust to ashes. Into these ashes, pour out your life-giving water of grace and mercy, and from this clay, create for me a new heart,
fired in the passion of your love, and sealed by your Spirit, that you may live in me and guide my hands and my feet, my arms and my legs, but most especially my mind, my heart, and my tongue.
May your words be ever on my lips, as sweet as honey, and may the river of your Divine Mercy well up within my heart and overflow to fall as a gentle rain into the lives of all who thirst for your love, your mercy, your grace, your Truth, and your peace.
Amen.
